Stuttgart has clinched a coveted spot in next season’s UEFA Champions League following their hard-fought draw against Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday, May 16.
Bundesliga finish secures European football’s elite competition
After a tense 2-2 draw in Frankfurt, VfB Stuttgart finished fourth in the Bundesliga, guaranteeing them a place in Europe’s premier club competition—a milestone achieved for only the seventh time in the club’s history. They join Bayern Munich (champions), Borussia Dortmund, and RB Leipzig in securing Champions League football for Germany next season.
The match was a rollercoaster, with Stuttgart twice taking the lead. Chema Andrès opened the scoring in the 10th minute, followed by Nikolas Nartey just before halftime. However, Eintracht Frankfurt rallied in the second half, equalizing twice via penalties from Jonathan Burkhardt to salvage a draw.
Stuttgart edges out rivals in tight race
The result leaves Stuttgart with 62 points, narrowly ahead of TSG Hoffenheim (61) and Bayer Leverkusen (59), both of whom had their own battles to contend with. Hoffenheim suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat to Borussia Mönchengladbach, while Leverkusen could only manage a 1-1 draw at home against Hamburger SV.
Relegation drama unfolds at the bottom of the table
In the relegation zone, 1. FC Heidenheim and FC St. Pauli both suffered heartbreaking losses that confirmed their demotion to the 2. Bundesliga. Heidenheim fell 2-0 to Mainz 05, while St. Pauli lost 3-1 to VfL Wolfsburg. Wolfsburg, currently 16th, must now navigate a relegation playoff against the third-placed team from the second division—likely SV Elversberg, Hannover 96, or SC Paderborn.
Bayern Munich capped off their dominant season with a commanding 5-1 victory over 1. FC Köln, finishing with an astonishing 122 goals scored—Harry Kane alone contributed 36 of those, including a hat-trick in this match. The Bavarians secured their 35th Bundesliga title, reinforcing their status as Germany’s most successful club.
