The Alliance Nationale pour le Changement (ANC) is vocally opposing recent discussions hinting at a fresh political dialogue aimed at revising Togo’s Constitution. In a public statement issued on May 28, 2026, the party, under the leadership of Jean-Pierre Fabre, condemned these moves as a calculated political diversion. The ANC firmly stated its refusal to participate in any process it perceives as lacking genuine consensus.
According to the ANC, ongoing reports of impending discussions to once again modify the constitutional text raise significant questions. The party asserts that such an initiative fails to address the true democratic and governance concerns of the Togolese populace. Instead, it appears designed to further solidify the existing political framework established by recent institutional reforms.
The political group declared in its communiqué that it would not engage in any process akin to a “mock dialogue.” It urged other democratic forces, civil society organizations, and Togo’s international partners to remain vigilant against any reform that does not emerge from a broad national consensus.
Furthermore, the ANC reiterated its reservations concerning the Constitution currently in effect. The party maintains that the institutional changes implemented in recent years continue to generate concerns regarding their legitimacy and their capacity to fulfill the population’s democratic aspirations.
Through this declaration, the opposition reaffirmed its conviction that any significant constitutional reform must be preceded by an inclusive dialogue involving all political and social stakeholders within the country. This, the ANC considers, is an essential condition to ensure the credibility and public acceptance of any future reforms.
This firm stance comes at a time when institutional matters remain central to the national political discourse. Amid growing speculation surrounding a potential new constitutional revision, the ANC aims to clearly distance itself and preempt any initiative it believes runs counter to the spirit of a consensual democratic process.
