During the meeting, UN representatives commended Togo’s dedication to fostering peace and stability across Africa. They reaffirmed their commitment to backing President Gnassingbé’s leadership in forging a balanced, lasting resolution to the eastern DRC crisis. This endorsement highlights the effectiveness of Togo’s quiet, consensus-driven approach, built on regular consultations and measured diplomacy.

For Lomé, the challenge now is to translate this recognition into tangible influence over the Great Lakes region’s political landscape.

Aligning African and international efforts

While consultations between African mediators and UN officials are not unprecedented, their current importance has grown amid ongoing violence in eastern Congo. Both sides aim to sustain a unified strategy, ensuring that peace initiatives do not work at cross-purposes. By hosting these envoys, President Gnassingbé seeks to strengthen a more cohesive diplomatic framework that bridges regional and global actors toward a shared goal.

Lomé as a diplomatic hub for Congo’s crisis

The Monday meeting further solidifies Lomé’s reputation as a key venue for dialogue on the Congolese conflict. Togo, which frequently hosts African Union mediation consultations, is leveraging this visibility to enhance its influence in resolving regional disputes. Whether this intensified coordination between the African Union and the UN will yield concrete progress remains to be seen. In protracted conflicts, the true test of mediation lies in sustaining stakeholder engagement and incrementally creating the conditions for a durable agreement.
