Tom Saintfiet steps down as Mali football coach after two years

The Mali Football Federation (FEMAFOOT) and its president, Mahazou Cisset, officially announced the departure of Belgian coach Tom Saintfiet from his role as head of the national team. The announcement followed Saintfiet’s own statement, published via an Instagram post on April 27.

The federation expressed its deep gratitude for the coach’s dedication, highlighting his commitment during a period marked by complex challenges. Saintfiet, who took charge in August 2024, was praised for his professionalism and his ability to navigate difficult circumstances with integrity.

Saintfiet oversaw 17 official matches during his time with the Eagles of Mali, including competitive fixtures for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers and the FIFA World Cup qualifiers, as well as the AFCON tournament itself. His team secured 9 victories, 6 draws, and 2 defeats, culminating in a quarter-final appearance at AFCON 2025 against the eventual champions, Senegal.
