Niger faces surge in displaced amid violent attacks in south-west
Hundreds of residents have been forced to flee their homes following a wave of violent attacks in mid-July targeting villages in Niger’s south-western region of Dosso. The assaults, described as terrorist acts, struck at the heart of Loga district, a key agricultural area near the borders with Nigeria and Benin.
Sudden exodus disrupts farming season
A local official confirmed that the attacks, which began on July 17, resulted in dozens of civilian casualties and prompted an immediate displacement crisis. The violence erupted during the peak of the farming season, exacerbating the humanitarian toll on communities already struggling to recover from years of instability.
The official, stationed in the affected zone, reported that at least three villages bore the brunt of the assaults, leaving families with no choice but to abandon their homes and livelihoods.
