The United States Embassy in Mali has issued a stern advisory for American citizens currently in Bamako, urging them to exercise extreme caution when traveling within the capital. The warning comes as Malian authorities intensify security measures around key areas, particularly routes leading to Modibo Keita International Airport and several districts of the city.
According to the embassy’s latest guidelines, heightened security deployments are now in effect, including additional checkpoints, roadblocks, and the potential closure of certain thoroughfares. These measures are expected to cause significant disruptions to traffic flow, particularly in the coming days.
Officials have highlighted that the security reinforcements coincide with an anticipated rise in safety concerns during the upcoming religious holiday season, including Aïd al-Adha (Tabaski), which is set for May 27. To mitigate risks, the embassy strongly advises American nationals to minimize non-essential travel within Bamako until the end of the month.
The advisory also emphasizes avoiding crowded areas or protest sites, refraining from crossing security barriers, and maintaining heightened situational awareness at all times. Travelers are urged to review their personal security plans, ensure reliable communication channels, keep travel documents updated and readily available, and prepare contingency plans, including identifying safe refuge locations if necessary.
