Algeria and Niger energize strategic partnership with new oil exploration

Algerian Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb, acting on a directive from President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, traveled to Niger on Thursday. There, alongside his Nigerien counterpart Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine, he oversaw the official commencement of drilling operations for the Kafra Sud-Est 1 exploration well. This significant undertaking marks a fresh chapter in strengthening the strategic alliance between Algiers and Niamey, simultaneously bolstering Sonatrach’s expanding footprint in Niger.
Upon his arrival at the Kafra oil field, situated in northern Niger approximately 85 kilometers from the Algerian border, the Prime Minister received a warm reception from his Nigerien counterpart. They were joined by government officials and high-ranking national representatives. This visit unfolds amidst a shared commitment by leaders from both nations to inject new momentum into Algeria-Niger relations, elevating them beyond political alignment towards tangible economic and energy collaboration.
The initiation of drilling at Kafra Sud-Est 1 perfectly encapsulates this renewed drive. It represents one of the initial practical implementations of their shared ambition to bolster joint ventures in critical sectors, particularly energy and hydrocarbons. Prime Minister Ghrieb underscored that this operation lays “a new cornerstone” in the strategic partnership between Algeria and Niger. He highlighted that this project follows just weeks after the commissioning of the Niamey power plant. “Today, two months and ten days after the inauguration of the Niamey power plant, we gather to collectively place another building block in our strategic partnership,” the Prime Minister affirmed during the official ceremony.
This fresh impetus stems directly from the expressed desires of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and his Nigerien counterpart, General Abdourahamane Tiani. Both leaders are committed to solidifying bilateral relations and translating political aspirations into tangible programs and projects. Furthermore, it aligns with the resolutions adopted during the second session of the Grand Algerian-Nigerien Joint Cooperation Commission, which convened in Niamey on March 23 and 24, 2026.
A high-stakes exploration operation
Drilling at the Kafra Sud-Est 1 well is part of extensive exploration efforts aimed at comprehensively assessing the Kafra field’s oil potential, preceding any potential development and production phases. For Sonatrach, this venture carries significant energy, industrial, and strategic implications. The Algerian group is committed to deploying its specialized expertise while solidifying its long-term presence in Niger. Several of Sonatrach’s subsidiaries are actively involved: the National Drilling Company (Enafor) manages the human, technical, and logistical resources required for the well’s execution; the National Well Services Company (ENSP) contributes its specialized services; and the National Geophysics Company (ENG) provides geophysical expertise. This collaborative effort showcases Algeria’s profound capabilities in the hydrocarbons sector, uniting various Sonatrach competencies on an international project. Brahim Hammoudi, CEO of Enafor, articulated this clear ambition, emphasizing the company’s commitment to “establishing its presence in Niger within a framework of sustainable cooperation.”
Beyond the technical execution of the drilling, Kafra Sud-Est 1 is poised to serve as a showcase for Algerian drilling expertise, simultaneously enabling Enafor to enhance its experience in global markets.
Niger, a partner set to grow in significance
However, cooperation between the two nations is not expected to be confined solely to exploration activities. A memorandum of understanding, inked on June 2 between Enafor and the Nigerien National Petroleum Company (Sonidep), outlines plans to explore the establishment of a joint venture specializing in drilling. This forward-looking initiative could pave the way for more extensive industrial collaboration, particularly focusing on skill transfer, human resource training, and bolstering local capabilities. For Algeria, the goal is twofold: to expand its companies’ operations in Niger while actively contributing to the development of the Nigerien oil industry. For Niamey, this partnership offers a valuable opportunity to leverage the extensive experience and expertise of a petroleum group with a long track record in hydrocarbon exploration and production.
Four exploration wells on the program
Furthermore, Kafra Sud-Est 1 represents the initial milestone in a more comprehensive exploration agenda. Rabah Bouchak, SIPEX Director in Niger, confirmed that Sonatrach intends to commence drilling four exploration wells in northern Niger over the next two years. This ambitious schedule reflects the group’s escalating interest in the region’s energy potential and reaffirms its commitment to progressively strengthening its presence in Niger. Preliminary studies and ongoing work have revealed promising hydrocarbon prospects, lending significant importance to the upcoming exploration operations. Thus, the launch of Kafra Sud-Est 1 is a pivotal step towards gaining a deeper understanding of the field’s potential and outlining its future development prospects.

The Algerian energy giant already possesses extensive experience in several African nations, including Libya, where it actively participates in exploration and production endeavors.
