Algeria and Niger launch oil exploration at Kafra South field

historic drilling project launches in Niger’s Kafra basin

With the official groundbreaking ceremony for the Kafra South-East 1 exploratory well, Algeria and Niger have marked a pivotal moment in their strategic energy partnership. The event, held in northern Niger, underscores a deepening collaboration between the two nations in the hydrocarbon sector.

Strategic energy initiative kicks off in Kafra

The inauguration ceremony took place at the Kafra oil field, where Algerian Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb joined his Nigerien counterpart, Ali Lamine Zeine Mahaman, to launch the drilling operation. Representing President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the Algerian delegation included key figures such as Mohamed Arkab, State Minister of Hydrocarbons, and Noureddine Daoudi, CEO of Algeria’s national oil company Sonatrach.

The high-level delegation also comprised Lounès Magramane, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Saadi Ahmed, Algeria’s Ambassador to Niger. Their presence highlighted the significance of this joint venture in unlocking Niger’s untapped oil potential.

From diplomacy to tangible economic cooperation

This project is the latest in a series of concrete steps aimed at strengthening bilateral ties between Algiers and Niamey. It reflects the shared vision of Presidents Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Abdourahamane Tiani to deepen fraternal relations and promote mutually beneficial economic collaboration.

The launch of the Kafra South-East 1 well demonstrates how diplomatic commitments are now translating into real-world partnerships, particularly in energy and industrial sectors that drive regional development.

Accelerating regional growth through joint ventures

The drilling operation follows recent milestones, including the inauguration of the Niamey power plant, which was agreed upon during the second session of the Algerian-Nigerien High-Level Joint Commission in March 2026. By fast-tracking such initiatives, both countries aim to enhance cross-border investment and foster sustainable economic progress in West Africa.
