The Algerian women’s team wrote a new chapter in their football history on Saturday by defeating Ivory Coast 2-1 in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinals. This landmark win not only secured their place in the semifinals for the first time but also earned them a coveted spot in the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, to be held in Brazil.

The match began with Ivory Coast taking an early lead through Inès Konan in the 30th minute. However, Algeria refused to concede defeat. The turning point came shortly before halftime when Ivory Coast’s Safi N’Sira Ouedraogo was sent off with a straight red card for a dangerous challenge on Algeria’s goalkeeper, Chloé N’Gazi (42nd minute). This gave Algeria a numerical advantage and shifted the momentum firmly in their favor.

Algeria equalized just after the break through Inès Khiri (58th minute), who had come on to replace Lina Boussaha earlier in the game (46th minute). Algeria capitalized on an error by Ivorian goalkeeper Aramatou Diakité to score their second goal through Amira Ould Braham (64th minute), sealing a hard-fought victory.

Having reached the quarterfinals in the previous edition, the team has now surpassed all expectations under the guidance of coach Farid Benstiti.
