Bénin 2060: education council prioritizes science and technical training
Cotonou — From August 5 to 7, 2026, the National Education Council (CNE) of Bénin convenes its third consultative assembly in Cotonou, focusing on strengthening scientific, technological, and vocational education pathways. The three-day meeting brings together government officials, academics, private sector representatives, technical and financial partners, and civil society to align on priorities for the nation’s educational future.
Driving industrialization through education
The gathering, hosted at the Golden Tulip hotel, centers on how education, research, and vocational training can fuel Bénin’s industrial growth and digital transformation. Discussions focus on strategies to guide students toward STEM and applied sciences, positioning them as key drivers of economic progress.
The event convenes CNE members, government delegates, university leaders, public and private institutions, and civil society organizations. Their shared goal is to assess progress on prior recommendations and shape actionable policies that elevate educational quality and relevance.
CNE’s role in shaping Bénin’s educational future
Executive Secretary Clément Chabi emphasized the CNE’s mandate as a national dialogue platform, where diverse stakeholders collaborate to advance sustainable development, prosperity, and technological sovereignty. He highlighted the critical role of youth empowerment, research excellence, and human capital development in achieving these ambitions.
President Noël Ahonangnon Gbaguidi outlined the CNE’s legal and strategic responsibilities, including shaping national education policies, coordinating sector-wide initiatives, and monitoring public policy implementation. The council, comprising 69 members from public and private sectors, reviewed performance reports and proposed reforms to enhance the national education system.

Over three days, delegates evaluated progress on past recommendations while exploring ways to improve teaching quality and bridge educational priorities with the Bénin 2060 long-term development framework. A key focus is strengthening science, technology, and vocational training to spur innovation, support digital adoption, and meet industrialization demands.
While concrete implementation plans were not finalized, the assembly underscored the need for targeted investments in education infrastructure, teacher training, and industry-aligned curricula. The outcomes will guide future policy decisions as Bénin charts its path toward a knowledge-driven economy.
