Bilateral relations between Bénin and Niger are gaining momentum as expert committees from both nations convened in Cotonou to advance discussions on reopening their shared border. The meeting follows the official visit of Bénin’s President Romuald Wadagni to Niamey on June 2, a key step in the ongoing normalization process.

Under the leadership of Niger’s State Minister of Security, General Mohamed Toumba, and Bénin’s Minister of African Integration, Adjadi Bakari, the joint committees tackled critical issues including security protocols, defense cooperation, diplomatic frameworks, legal considerations, and economic collaboration. The closed-door session, which began on June 20, continued into the following day.

While the reopening of the Bénin-Niger border is eagerly anticipated, final agreements on defense, security protocols, and customs procedures remain pending. These unresolved details are expected to be finalized in upcoming negotiations.
