Cameroon is putting the final touches on preparations to host the 51st general assembly of the Francophonie Parliamentary Assembly (APF), set to take place in Yaoundé from July 7 to 12, 2026. This marks the country’s third major international event of the year, following the 14th World Trade Organization ministerial conference and the papal visit by Pope Léon XIV.
Diplomatic and logistical groundwork underway
In a high-level meeting at the Cameroonian National Assembly, Ambassador André-Magnus Ekoumou was received by Assembly President Théodore Datouo. The discussions centered on evaluating the country’s readiness to welcome delegates, align with national priorities, and uphold the vision outlined by President Paul Biya.
The Cameroonian embassy in France has launched a streamlined visa facilitation process, ensuring prompt issuance of courtesy visas for all incoming delegations. This move underscores the country’s commitment to seamless international cooperation and hospitality.
Strengthening parliamentary democracy and digital innovation
During the meeting, President Datouo highlighted the importance of reinforcing parliamentary democracy and praised the ambassador’s role in supporting Cameroonians residing in France, particularly in organizing their participation in Promote 2026—a major business forum scheduled at the Palais des Congrès in Yaoundé.
The assembly also discussed plans to establish a parliamentary museum within the National Assembly. The project aims to blend historical preservation with technological advancement, leveraging French expertise in digital archiving and museum management to create an interactive and modern exhibition space.
Key agenda items on the horizon
Among the pivotal topics on the assembly’s agenda is the election of the next Secretary-General of the International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF). With the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda emerging as leading candidates, the outcome will shape the future direction of the organization.
