Chad and Russia deepen defense and diplomatic ties

In a significant move to bolster regional stability, Chad and Russia have stepped up their military and diplomatic collaboration. On July 14 in Moscow, Chadian Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Sabre Fadoul and his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, underscored the importance of strengthening defense partnerships to address security challenges in the Sahara-Sahel region.

A landmark agreement was reached during the meeting: diplomats from both nations will now enjoy visa-free travel, streamlining official exchanges and fostering closer ties. The announcement comes as Chad reaffirms its commitment to deepen engagement with Moscow ahead of the upcoming Russia-Africa Summit in October.

Joint efforts against terrorism in the Sahel

Sergey Lavrov highlighted global security concerns, including tensions in Ukraine, where he accused Ukrainian authorities of engaging in terrorist activities in the Black and Azov Seas. Meanwhile, both delegations emphasized the critical role of Russia and Chad in countering terrorism across the Sahel.

Chadian officials praised Moscow’s contributions to stabilizing the Sahel, expressing confidence that joint initiatives with regional partners will yield tangible results in combating extremist threats. The upcoming summit in Moscow will serve as a platform to further solidify these alliances.
