Côte d’Ivoire advocates human-centered migration governance at un forum

Côte d’Ivoire champions humane migration governance at global forum

The Côte d’Ivoire has taken a bold step on the international stage by actively participating in the second session of the International Migration Review Forum (IMRF) at the United Nations headquarters in New York. This engagement underscores the country’s unwavering commitment to a migration governance model rooted in cooperation, human dignity, and sustainable development.

Held to assess progress on the implementation of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration—adopted in 2018 in Marrakech—the forum brought together nations to address critical challenges surrounding global human mobility.

Ivorian delegation highlights progress in migration data and inclusive policies

Representing Côte d’Ivoire at high-level sessions, Dr. Hinin Moustapha—Director General of the National Population Office (ONP)—shared the country’s achievements in migration management. Key milestones include:

  • Strengthened migration data systems to improve evidence-based policymaking.
  • Reduced vulnerabilities through targeted social programs and reintegration initiatives.
  • Enhanced international cooperation to address cross-border migration challenges.
  • Robust measures against discrimination to foster an inclusive society.

Dr. Moustapha emphasized the Côte d’Ivoire’s transformation in migration data collection, aiming to produce reliable, disaggregated statistics to guide public policies effectively. A landmark 2025 national migration survey was cited as a testament to this commitment, positioning the country as a leader in evidence-driven migration governance in Africa.

From data to dignity: protecting migrants in Côte d’Ivoire

Beyond statistics, the Ivorian government has prioritized the protection and social integration of migrants. Integrated policies now ensure better care and reintegration, reducing exposure to exploitation and abuse. Additionally, awareness campaigns and institutional reforms have been launched to combat discrimination and promote human rights.

A call for global solidarity in migration governance

The Côte d’Ivoire delegation used the platform to advocate for a migration governance model based on shared responsibility and international solidarity. In Abidjan’s view, tackling migration challenges requires coordinated action among countries of origin, transit, and destination.

Migration as an engine for shared prosperity

Rather than viewing migration solely as a security or social burden, the Côte d’Ivoire redefines it as a strategic opportunity for economic, cultural, and human development. Aligned with its tradition of hospitality, the country aims to leverage migration as a catalyst for inclusive growth, grounded in dignity, solidarity, and data-driven insights.

By championing this forward-thinking approach, Côte d’Ivoire is setting a regional benchmark, proving that humane and strategic migration governance can drive progress for all.
