In a landmark high-level summit on the Cocoa Initiative held on June 16, 2026, leaders from Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana reaffirmed their shared commitment to fostering a sustainable cocoa economy. President Alassane Ouattara of Côte d’Ivoire and President John Dramani Mahama of Ghana emphasized the critical importance of this partnership in addressing global and environmental challenges facing the cocoa sector.
Strengthening economic sovereignty and rural livelihoods
The future of the cocoa industry is not just about trade—it is a cornerstone of economic sovereignty, social stability, and shared prosperity for both nations. President Ouattara highlighted how the cocoa sector sustains millions of rural lives across West Africa, generating essential income for families, creating jobs, and funding critical development programs. With Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana alone producing over 60% of the world’s cocoa—and Africa contributing nearly 80%—the stakes are undeniably high.
Confronting global challenges head-on
Despite progress, the cocoa value chain faces mounting pressures. Price volatility in global markets, the accelerating impacts of climate change, and tightening international regulations on sustainability and traceability demand urgent, coordinated action. President Ouattara stressed the need to build a unified African coalition of cocoa-producing nations to amplify the continent’s influence in global governance of the sector. He also underscored the importance of maintaining momentum on existing gains while addressing lingering structural vulnerabilities.
A call for deeper collaboration and investment
President Mahama echoed this vision, urging both countries to intensify efforts and financial investments to ensure the long-term resilience of the cocoa industry. He emphasized that strengthening institutional ties between Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana would enhance bilateral cooperation, foster knowledge exchange, and create a more robust framework for supporting farmers. “Our shared goal is to equip cocoa producers with everything they need to continue thriving,” he stated, reinforcing the commitment to empower rural communities at the heart of this vital sector.
