The Malian midfielder Mamadou Sangaré, who emerged as a revelation during his stint at RC Lens, has officially signed with Brentford in the Premier League. The transfer, described as a “record-breaking” move for the French club, was finalized over the weekend.
Although the exact transfer fee remains undisclosed, British media outlets estimate the deal to be worth over €45 million. This makes Sangaré the most expensive signing in Brentford’s history, capping off an extraordinary season for the 24-year-old.
From Lens to London: A breakout season
Sangaré arrived at RC Lens last summer from Rapid Vienna, quickly establishing himself as a key player in Ligue 1. His performances earned him a starting spot in the league’s best XI, helped secure the French Cup, and brought him the prestigious Marc-Vivien Foé Award, which honors the best African player in the French championship.
Reflecting on the signing, Brentford manager Keith Andrews expressed his enthusiasm: “Mamadou has been on our radar for some time… He ticks all the boxes we look for in a Brentford player, both on and off the pitch. I believe he will become a fan favorite very quickly.”
Early career and rise to prominence
Born in Bamako, Sangaré was scouted by Red Bull Salzburg after shining at the Yeelen Olympique academy in Mali’s capital. His journey continued with a loan to Zulte Waregem in Belgium during the 2022/23 season, where he made 10 appearances in the Jupiler Pro League, scoring once. He then moved to Rapid Vienna in 2024/25 before his breakthrough season in France.
With his five-year contract now signed, Sangaré is set to make his mark in one of football’s most competitive leagues, bringing his dynamic presence to Brentford’s midfield.
