Cotonou’s new Zongo truck park transforms logistics and driver experience

This Friday marked a historic milestone for road transport and port traffic management in Bénin. The Port Autonome de Cotonou (PAC) inaugurated the Zongo Truck Park, a state-of-the-art facility designed to revolutionize how heavy goods vehicles operate in and around the country’s economic hub.

From chaos to order: a 700-space logistics revolution

The new truck park sits just minutes from the port’s entrance, positioning itself as the essential transit hub for long-haul trucks and regional freight flows. Gone are the days of chaotic parking along the Marina Boulevard. This 13-hectare buffer zone now accommodates up to 700 trucks daily, serving not only Bénin but also neighboring landlocked nations like Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali.

The facility features wide maneuvering areas and carefully designed roundabouts, ensuring seamless vehicle movement and drastically cutting down on fender-benders and driver stress. The layout prioritizes safety while maximizing efficiency for some of the region’s largest transport fleets.

Smart technology drives faster, cleaner operations

Innovation lies at the core of the Zongo Truck Park’s design. Fully integrated with the Guichet unique du commerce extérieur (GUCE), the site leverages digital tools to streamline logistics workflows.

Key digital features include:

  • Online spot reservations: transporters can book parking bays in advance, optimizing trip planning and reducing last-minute scrambles.
  • Cashless payment systems: all parking fees are settled digitally, eliminating queues at physical payment counters and cutting administrative delays.
  • Real-time vehicle tracking: advanced surveillance cameras and automated guidance systems provide live updates on entries, exits, and traffic flow within the park.

Beyond parking: a sanctuary for long-distance drivers

The project goes far beyond mere vehicle storage. Under the ‘Rangazongo’ initiative, the PAC has created a driver-friendly environment aimed at combating fatigue and improving road safety across West Africa’s transit corridors.

Facilities include modern restrooms and showers, rest zones, recreational spaces, and food outlets. A robust access control system and high-performance lighting ensure round-the-clock security for both drivers and cargo. As one port official noted, “We’re not just parking trucks—we’re giving drivers the rest they need to complete their journeys safely.”

Strengthening Cotonou’s role as a West African logistics giant

With an investment nearing 25 billion FCFA, the Zongo Truck Park is part of a broader modernization drive at the Port Autonome de Cotonou. By centralizing truck traffic and providing a single, efficient entry point, the facility accelerates port operations and bolsters the port’s competitiveness in the subregion.

For logistics operators, the era of endless delays and congestion on Cotonou’s streets is over. The future of freight handling in Bénin is now smarter, cleaner, and driver-focused—setting a new standard for regional logistics.
