Gabon’s social media blackout persists: economic and democratic stakes mount

Five months have elapsed since Gabon entered a digital lockdown. Since mid-February, major social media platforms have remained inaccessible without a VPN, following a directive from the Haute Autorité de la Communication (HAC). What began as a temporary measure to curb hate speech and misinformation has evolved into an indefinite restriction, with authorities offering no clarity on its eventual lifting. The prolonged silence from decision-makers has transformed a once-temporary policy into what many now perceive as a permanent fixture, leaving citizens and businesses in limbo.
