Kalidou Koulibaly’s prolonged absence fuels World Cup worries for Senegal
With fewer than two months remaining until the FIFA World Cup, the football world is watching closely as Kalidou Koulibaly, the backbone of Senegal’s defense and team captain, remains sidelined due to a persistent thigh injury. The 34-year-old defensive stalwart, who boasts 102 international caps and two goals for his country, has not featured for his club, Saudi Arabian giants Al-Hilal, since April 8.
The injury, sustained during a training session, has kept Koulibaly off the pitch indefinitely, casting a shadow of uncertainty over his participation in the tournament. The Senegal national team, known as the Lions of Teranga, will face formidable opponents in the group stage, including France, Norway, and Iraq in Group I.
No clear return timeline from Al-Hilal
In a recent press briefing, Al-Hilal’s head coach, Simone Inzaghi, addressed the situation with cautious optimism. “We have two players dealing with injuries—Malcom and Koulibaly. Malcom is back and ready, but Koulibaly suffered a thigh contusion that led to a hematoma. We are monitoring his progress daily, and his return will depend on how well his body responds to treatment in the coming days,” the Italian tactician explained.
The club has taken a meticulous approach to Koulibaly’s recovery, as outlined in their official statement. Following medical examinations conducted in Spain, it was determined that the defender required additional rehabilitation sessions at the Meena Clinic, located within the club’s headquarters. The focus has been on addressing the injury to the anterior thigh muscle. With only six league matches remaining in Al-Hilal’s season, the timeline for Koulibaly’s return remains uncertain.
His absence has already been felt, as he missed both the Africa Cup of Nations final and the international friendlies in March against Peru (2-0) and Gambia (3-1). The question on everyone’s lips now is: Will Koulibaly be fit in time for the World Cup?
