The Malian army has announced that it has regained the initiative and control of the situation in all areas targeted by attacks by the Front de libération de l’Azawad (FLA) in the north and by the ‘Soutien de l’islam et des musulmans’ group linked to Al-Qaïda in the centre and south of the country.
Fighting resumed on Sunday at Anifif, about 110 km south of Kidal city, after reinforcements were deployed to the FLA front.
The Malian army said it continued to engage with determination and discipline, despite facing an attempt to press its advantage.
It reiterated its confidence in the ability of the Forces armées maliennes to defend national unity, protect the population, and defeat enemy forces.
The FLA claimed control of Anfif after resuming fighting, but denied reports of the death of its leader Mbarek Ag Akli, saying he was still directing military operations in northern Mali.
