The Olympique de Marseille (OM) finds itself under mounting pressure to offload Greenwood, driven by financial constraints and the need to trim its wage bill. In Italy, reactions have been particularly vocal, with analysts questioning the viability of the deal. Roberto Pruzzo, a prominent Italian football journalist, expressed his reservations, stating: “Greenwood’s transfer negotiations follow a familiar pattern—one that rarely ends well. There’s always lingering doubt about the player’s genuine interest in joining a club. In the end, he often ends up elsewhere, leaving clubs in limbo.”
His colleague, Fernando Orsi, added his perspective, highlighting the broader implications for AS Roma: “Football doesn’t stand still waiting for Greenwood. Beyond his on-field abilities, his reliability as a person is questionable. With half the transfer fee, Roma could secure a player who perfectly aligns with Gian Piero Gasperini’s vision. Paolo Marcacci has already begun exploring contingency options for AS Roma, suggesting that the club could pivot to other profiles. “Moreira, for instance, is a standout player whose style fits Gasperini’s philosophy seamlessly. His stock has risen since the World Cup, but so have the profiles of Nusa, Garnacho, and others. Tresoldi, too, delivered a strong league campaign. Gasperini has the tools to refine Moreira into an even more complete player.”
Marcacci further emphasized the financial hurdles posed by Greenwood’s salary, noting that Roma’s decision to bypass the Champions League may have influenced their failure to secure the Englishman.
