Manchester United’s former winger Mason Greenwood is once again at the center of intense transfer speculation, with his move to Fenerbahçe now looking increasingly likely. Just days after reports suggested he was close to joining AS Roma, the English player has seemingly shifted his focus to Turkey, leaving Italian football circles in a state of frustration.
Olympique de Marseille (OM), facing financial constraints and eager to reduce its wage bill, has been pushing for Greenwood’s exit. The club’s urgency contrasts sharply with the initial excitement surrounding his potential move to the Italian capital, where AS Roma manager Gian Piero Gasperini had reportedly identified him as a top priority. This abrupt change of plans has left many in Italy questioning the reliability of such negotiations.
Italian pundits slam Greenwood’s transfer saga
Renowned Italian football journalist Roberto Pruzzo expressed his dismay over the unfolding situation. “Greenwood’s transfer is exactly the kind of deal that always ends badly,” he remarked. “There’s no clarity on whether the player genuinely wants to join Roma. In the end, he ends up at Fenerbahçe. Rarely do you hear, ‘This is the player I want,’ and see it happen within hours.” His colleague Fernando Orsi chimed in, adding, “Football won’t stop if Greenwood leaves. As a person, he doesn’t seem trustworthy, and with half that budget, Roma could find a player who fits Gasperini’s system perfectly. The World Cup is a showcase for talent—there’s always an alternative.”

Meanwhile, Paolo Marcacci, another prominent Italian football analyst, has already shifted focus to potential replacements for Greenwood. “Moreira is an outstanding player whose profile aligns perfectly with Gasperini’s philosophy,” he noted. “His market value has surged, partly thanks to his World Cup performances, but options like Nusa, Garnacho, and Tresoldi are also in play. Gasperini could develop Moreira into an even more complete player. Greenwood’s salary is simply unaffordable for Italian clubs, especially with the Champions League ambitions at stake.”
