Armed militants linked to Boko Haram carried out a violent raid on a public secondary school in Lassa, Borno State, resulting in the abduction of multiple students during an ongoing biology examination.
The attack unfolded just as the school day began, with gunmen storming the premises before seizing a significant number of pupils. Authorities later confirmed that an educator lost their life in the assault, while several others sustained injuries.
Borno State Police spokesperson Nahum Kenneth Daso revealed that the attackers arrived on motorcycles, exploiting the crowded conditions of Lassa’s weekly market to blend in and execute their plan. Security sources indicate that the insurgents deliberately targeted the school amid the heightened activity in the area.
Following the incident, Nigeria’s military launched a counteroperation in the Daggu locality, where a soldier was killed in a firefight with the militants. Commanders reported that ten of the abducted students were rescued during the operation, all of whom are now receiving medical and psychological support. Efforts are ongoing to locate the remaining captives and dismantle the assailants’ network.
Boko Haram has maintained a brutal insurgency in Nigeria’s northeast since the early 2000s, with more than a decade of violent clashes claiming tens of thousands of lives. The group’s attacks have spilled across borders into Cameroon, Chad, and Niger, particularly along the Lake Chad basin, where thousands have perished and hundreds of thousands displaced.
