Bénin marks 2026 World Refugee Day with renewed protection pledge
Natitingou’s youth center hosted the official events for World Refugee Day 2026 on Saturday, June 20, uniting government leaders, UN officials, and displaced communities in a shared commitment to refugee protection.
The ceremony, led by Djibril Mama Cissé, Minister of Interior and Public Security, was attended by Aminatou Sar, UN Resident Coordinator in Bénin, and Thomas Wyllie, Deputy Regional Director of the UNHCR for West Africa. Key moments included keynote speeches, visits to income-generating exhibition stands run by refugees, and a tree-planting ceremony symbolizing hope and renewal.
This year’s international theme, “Until everyone is safe”, underscores the global urgency to address the plight of refugees and asylum seekers. Bénin currently hosts nearly 29,000 registered refugees and asylum seekers, along with 14,000 pending cases, reflecting both the country’s humanitarian resolve and the strain on its resources.
Aminatou Sar highlighted the collaborative efforts between the UN system and Bénin’s government, emphasizing sustained support in food security, healthcare, child education, and psychosocial assistance for displaced populations. “Bénin’s inclusive approach sets an example in the region, balancing national security with international protection obligations,” she noted.
Djibril Mama Cissé reinforced the government’s commitment to asylum rights and the principle of non-refoulement, stressing that robust identification and registration mechanisms ensure both security and protection. “Our legal and institutional framework guarantees refugees access to essential services—healthcare, education, employment, and social protection—on Bénin soil,” he stated.
The event also featured contributions from Norbert Tido N’Dah, Natitingou’s deputy mayor, and Albert Nacoulma, a refugee spokesperson, who pledged adherence to national laws and renewed efforts toward social cohesion. The day concluded with symbolic tree-planting and community activities, reinforcing the message of resilience and shared responsibility.
