Nyong-et-Kellé: construction of Malombo bridge access roads nears completion
As of June 29, 2026, construction work on the access roads to the Malombo bridge over the Nyong River in Nyong-et-Kellé is entering its final phase. Following the completion of the roadway structure, CFHEC teams have now moved on to installing road signs and sanitation measures.
The nearly finished access roads to the Malombo bridge span 960 meters across both banks of the Nyong River. The roadway features a dual-carriageway profile with two 3.5-meter-wide lanes in each direction, plus 1.5-meter shoulders on both sides. The pavement structure consists of a 25 cm lateritic foundation layer, a 20 cm crushed gravel base, and a 5 cm asphalt concrete wearing course.
The bridge superstructure itself is also nearing completion. Authorities from the Ministry of Public Works confirm the project will be delivered ahead of schedule—about eight months earlier than the original timeline. By June 11, the Nyong River’s water levels had receded sufficiently to allow final construction stages on the 160-meter-long structure, which uses a steel-concrete composite bipoutre system. The completed approach spans, which have been in place for months, now support the bridge deck to facilitate river crossing for local communities. Access road construction has also kept pace with these developments.
The CFHEC construction firm is now focusing on finalizing all aspects of the project, supported by the INTEGC/GENERAL ENGINEERING oversight group. The entire initiative is overseen by the Ministry of Public Works, whose continuous monitoring has ensured steady progress despite initial challenges.
This milestone caps a challenging yet successful journey. Early obstacles included disputes over construction camp locations, difficult acclimatization for workers, fuel theft, community resistance, and torrential rains that caused flooding. Despite these hurdles, the company remained committed to its promise to deliver the bridge before the deadline set by the project owner.
