Morocco disrupts alleged plot to force border crossing into Ceuta
The Moroccan Ministry of Interior spokesperson, Rachid El Khalfi, confirmed the arrests of suspected ringleaders behind a planned mass border incursion into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta on August 15. Authorities also denounced online campaigns inciting such attempts and urged Spain to expedite the repatriation of unaccompanied minors.
Moroccan authorities have mobilized all available resources to prevent any illegal attempts to breach the borders of Ceuta and Melilla. This decisive action follows the emergence of anonymous social media posts and messages circulating in recent days, calling for a coordinated mass crossing attempt scheduled for August 15.
Speaking to the press, Interior Ministry spokesperson Rachid El Khalfi confirmed that security forces have already arrested several individuals suspected of organizing and promoting these calls to action. The detainees are currently undergoing judicial investigation under the supervision of the competent prosecutor’s office. Authorities emphasized that such appeals pose « serious risks to individual safety » and constitute legal violations, warning that both participants and organizers will face legal consequences.
Sustained border surveillance measures
The Ministry of Interior stressed that security operations coordinated by the General Directorate for National Security (DGSN) extend beyond temporary measures. Rather, they represent an ongoing commitment to continuous monitoring in areas adjacent to the Ceuta and Melilla border crossings. This operational framework remains adaptable, responding dynamically to emerging threats and evolving circumstances on the ground.
Moroccan authorities have called on the public to exercise caution, remain vigilant, and reject misleading directives that endanger lives. They reiterated that combating irregular migration is conducted strictly within the bounds of the law.
Shared responsibility with Spain on minor repatriations
Official statements highlighted the need for a « shared responsibility » approach between Morocco and Spain in addressing irregular migration and human trafficking networks. In this context, the Moroccan Interior Ministry urged Spanish authorities to accelerate the repatriation process for unaccompanied minors currently in Ceuta to reunite them with their families in Morocco.
Rabat emphasized the importance of the « immediate repatriation » mechanism, citing its proven effectiveness in previous operations at the border. The Ministry assured that Moroccan authorities will continue to uphold public order and safety with firmness and responsibility, maintaining high levels of preparedness and constant coordination in full compliance with legal provisions.
