On Saturday, Ousmane Sonko convened a significant rally in Linguère, drawing an immense crowd of activists eager to stand with the Pastef leader. In a forceful address, Sonko minced no words as he aimed sharp criticism at the current President of the Republic, who had removed him from his position as Prime Minister just last May.
“The Senegalese people did not fight for this”
Addressing an enthusiastic audience, Ousmane Sonko condemned what he described as a vast chasm between the foundational ideals that propelled the movement to power and the present actions of the executive branch. In a particularly striking moment, he emphatically declared: “The Senegalese people did not cast their votes for this. The Senegalese people did not struggle for this outcome. Lives were not lost for this. Individuals did not endure imprisonment for this. The Senegalese people fought to fundamentally alter the system. Yet, today, that very same system occupies the palace and continues to entrench itself.”
This pronouncement signals an undeniable break between the Pastef leader and the individual currently holding the highest office, directly challenging the government’s present course, which Sonko perceives as a stark departure from the principles championed during their time in opposition. Clearly resolute in his intent to contest the President of Kiiraay – Les Patriotes républicains in forthcoming electoral contests, Ousmane Sonko expressed unwavering confidence in a future victory, irrespective of any political maneuvers by his adversaries.
“That is why I believe he can gather all the mayors or forge alliances with every party he desires. As for me, I speak only to the people. Because in a democracy, there is but one truth, and that truth resides with the people,” he proclaimed, directing his message not only to his dedicated militants but to all Senegalese citizens.
