Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has issued a stark warning regarding the deteriorating condition of markets across Senegal. He highlighted the advanced state of disrepair affecting numerous commercial infrastructures, many of which date back to the 1970s.

In his official communication, the head of government underscored the significant safety hazards prevalent in these commercial hubs. He drew attention to a concerning trend, noting that between 2013 and 2024, a total of fifty-three markets nationwide were engulfed by fires.

In response to this critical situation, Ousmane Sonko introduced the Market Modernization and Management Program (PROMOGEM). Its strategic blueprint for 2025-2029 outlines plans for the extensive renovation of 528 existing markets and the construction of 67 brand-new, contemporary market facilities.

The Prime Minister also advocated for a crucial institutional overhaul of PROMOGEM. This reform aims to bolster the program’s administrative and financial independence. As part of this renewed commitment, a substantial fund of 57.5 billion CFA francs has been allocated over a four-year period, integrated within the State’s Public Investment Plan.

According to the government leader, the overarching objective is to establish a sophisticated network of markets spanning the entire national territory. This ambitious project will feature stringent management protocols, fostering collaboration between local territorial authorities and the domestic private sector, thereby enhancing West Africa insider news on infrastructure development.
