The Dakar High Court has postponed until July 22, 2026 the legal battle between businessman Mame Mbaye Niang and opposition leader Ousmane Sonko, granting the latter’s legal team additional time to address newly filed evidence.
At the heart of the dispute lies a villa in the Keur Gorgui district, originally owned by Sonko but now central to Niang’s efforts to recover 200 million CFA francs in damages. Back in 2023, the courts ruled in Niang’s favor, ordering Sonko to pay the sum after finding him guilty of fraudulent property transfer. However, executing this judgment hit a snag when legal records revealed the villa’s lease had been reassigned to Sonko’s family—a move Niang’s legal team calls a deliberate attempt to shield assets.
“This transfer was clearly designed to create insolvency,” Niang’s lawyers argued, accusing Sonko of engineering the transaction to avoid financial penalties. The case was initially scheduled for June 10 but was adjourned to allow Niang’s side to counter Sonko’s latest filings. The upcoming hearing will focus on whether the property transfer stands or should be reversed to enable Niang’s claim.
