Mouride spiritual leader calls for peace and national unity ahead of Senegal’s Grand Magal
The spiritual heart of Senegal’s Mouride Brotherhood is preparing for its most sacred annual gathering. As the city of Touba prepares to welcome millions of pilgrims for the Grand Magal of 2026, scheduled for Sunday, August 2, the Khalife général of the Mourides, Serigne Mountakha Mbacké, has reaffirmed his call for peace and national cohesion.
Ousmane Sonko, President of the National Assembly, made a courtesy visit to Touba on Thursday, July 30, to pay respects to the spiritual leader. During their meeting, he conveyed the assembly’s deep respect for Serigne Mountakha Mbacké and highlighted the spiritual and historical significance of the Grand Magal—a celebration that honors the exile of Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba, the founder of the Mouride order.
The National Assembly leader also praised the values of faith, perseverance, hard work, and peace that define the Mouride tradition. In response, the Khalife général renewed his urgent appeal for unity, emphasizing the need for social harmony and collective resilience. He also offered prayers for Ousmane Sonko and for the continued prosperity of Senegal and its people.
