Senegal’s new prime minister appointed amid political shifts

Senegal welcomes new prime minister after cabinet reshuffle

Senegalese Prime Minister Ahmadou Al Aminou Lô

President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has appointed economist Ahmadou Al Aminou Lô as Senegal’s new Prime Minister, as announced in a televised decree on May 25. Lô previously served as Secretary-General in the first government formed by Faye, who assumed office in April 2024, before being elevated to ministerial rank.

The appointment follows the dismissal of former Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, marking a significant shift in the country’s executive leadership after months of escalating tensions between the two officials.

As the former central bank executive, Lô brings extensive experience in West African financial systems, having worked with the Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO). His deep understanding of regional economic dynamics positions him well to navigate Senegal’s current political and financial landscape.
