Sénégal’s political chessboard: president Faye and prime minister Sonko’s intricate dynamic

Much like Serge Gainsbourg’s iconic track, “Je t’aime, moi non plus,” the relationship between Sénégal’s President Diomaye Faye and Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko presents a fascinating study in political nuance.

Following the notably modest gathering of a presidential coalition, somewhat laboriously orchestrated by Sokhna Aminata Touré Mimi, assisted by figures like Abdourakhmane Diouf, Me Abdoulaye Tine, and Serigne Guèye Diop, a telling image emerges, revealing the intricate subtleties of Senegalese political maneuvering.

Indeed, the nation often appears to be a grand theatrical performance.

In my assessment, three primary hypotheses illuminate this complex situation:

  1. There exists a genuine, perhaps ideological, divergence between the executive’s two leading figures. However, they possess the sagacity to compartmentalize these differences, preserving appearances and, by extension, the Republic itself. Each acknowledges their mutual dependence within the current delicate socio-economic climate.

2. President Diomaye Faye strategically established this political platform to rebalance the power dynamics between himself and his mentor. This is particularly crucial for him as President of the Republic, needing to assert his authority amidst the pressures from those around him. Yet, due to the absence of a robust political apparatus, President Faye hesitates to escalate this battle of egos. This hesitation potentially explains his sudden absence from the event at Caroline Faye Stadium in Mbour this past Saturday.

  1. Both leaders are executing a sophisticated strategy to contain the opposition and control public discourse. This involves staging a fabricated crisis to identify their true adversaries, setting them up for elimination at the earliest opportunity. Under this analytical framework, the goal is to completely isolate an opposition already relegated to an ungrateful role as an occasional and opportunistic supporter of President Diomaye Faye.

Ndoumbelane, a truly enchanting nation.
