Strengthening Sahel-Russia ties in Niamey security talks
Niamey, the heart of Niger, became the diplomatic stage this July 8th as the second round of high-level talks between the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) foreign ministers and Russia’s top diplomat, Sergey Lavrov, unfolded in the capital’s chambers.
Joining Lavrov were Niger’s Bakary Yaou Sangaré, Mali’s Abdoulaye Diop, and Burkina Faso’s Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré. Together, they mapped out fresh collaboration pathways across security and economic spheres, deepening the partnership between the four nations.
Speaking to the press, Mali’s Abdoulaye Diop highlighted the “fruitful and consistent exchanges between AES and Russia that have already delivered tangible gains—not just in defense cooperation, but also in trade and infrastructure development, all anchored in shared strategic priorities.”
On regional counterterrorism efforts, the AES ministers called for bolstered military coordination to enhance the operational readiness of the unified AES force. They also underscored the need to accelerate joint economic projects under the framework of the AES Year II roadmap.
Russia’s Sergey Lavrov, addressing the gathering, reaffirmed Moscow’s commitment to a “mutually advantageous partnership with the AES,” vowing continued support for both security initiatives and sustainable development programs that uplift local communities.
Background: This Niamey session follows the inaugural AES-Russia consultations held in Moscow in April 2025, part of a broader African outreach by the Russian foreign minister’s diplomatic tour.
