Niger hosts key diplomatic talks between AES and Russia
Niamey became the focal point of regional diplomacy on July 8 as the second round of ministerial consultations between the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) and Russia convened in the Nigerien capital. The high-level meeting brought together foreign affairs ministers from Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso, alongside Sergey Lavrov, Russia’s top diplomat, to chart a unified course for future cooperation.
Ministers Bakary Yaou Sangaré of Niger, Abdoulaye Diop of Mali, and Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré of Burkina Faso participated in discussions that yielded fresh strategic alignments between the four nations. Minister Diop highlighted the fruitful and consistent exchanges between the AES and Russia, which have yielded tangible progress not only in defense partnerships but also in economic and trade initiatives, all underpinned by a shared diplomatic vision.
Strengthening regional security and economic ties
During the talks, ministers emphasized the urgent need to escalate joint military efforts to bolster the operational readiness of the AES Unified Force. They also underscored the importance of deepening economic collaboration, particularly in executing the Second Year Roadmap of the AES Confederation, which outlines key developmental priorities for the region.
Addressing the gathering, Sergey Lavrov reaffirmed Russia’s unwavering commitment to fostering a mutually advantageous partnership with the AES. He reiterated Moscow’s solidarity and support for initiatives aimed at securing the confederation’s borders and advancing sustainable development to improve living conditions for local communities.
The latest consultations in Niamey follow the inaugural AES-Russia ministerial session held in Moscow in April 2025. These discussions are part of a broader diplomatic outreach by Russia’s foreign minister as he continues his African tour, reinforcing Moscow’s engagement with key regional players.
