On August 11, the Republic of the Chad commemorated its 66th Independence Day with a grand military parade held at N’Djamena’s Place de la Nation, accompanied by parallel ceremonies in major cities nationwide.
President Mahamat Déby Itno presided over the N’Djamena event, joined by two distinguished guests: Colonel Michaël Randrianirina, Head of Madagascar’s Transition Committee, and General Horta Inta-A, Leader of Guinea-Bissau’s Transitional Government.
The military display, lasting nearly an hour, showcased the operational prowess of Chad’s Forces de Défense et de Sécurité, which the General Staff reported comprises over 5,000 active personnel. The procession highlighted advanced equipment, tactical formations, and disciplined execution, underscoring the nation’s commitment to safeguarding its sovereignty.
Earlier that same day, President Déby Itno paid tribute at N’Djamena’s Monument aux Morts, laying a wreath in honor of fallen soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the country. This solemn gesture reinforced the nation’s gratitude toward its defenders and the legacy of their service.
Chad, formerly under French colonial rule, formally regained its independence on August 11, 1960. Since assuming office in May 2024 following national elections, President Mahamat Déby Itno has emphasized strengthening diplomatic ties beyond traditional partners, signaling a strategic pivot toward broader international collaboration.
