Algerian energy minister announces landmark project for N’Djamena
N’Djamena, Chad — Algeria’s commitment to expanding energy infrastructure across Africa is set to take another significant step forward with the upcoming groundbreaking ceremony for a new 40-megawatt power plant in Chad’s capital city, N’Djamena.
The announcement was made by Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies Mourad Adjal during a high-level event in Niamey, where he highlighted Algeria’s growing role in supporting regional energy development.
The new power plant, which will be constructed by Sonelgaz International, represents a strategic investment in Chad’s energy sector and underscores the broader ambitions of Algerian energy companies to deepen their presence across the African continent.
Project details and regional impact
The 40-megawatt facility will be built in N’Djamena as part of a bilateral agreement signed between Algeria and Chad earlier this year. This initiative aligns with Algeria’s broader strategy to strengthen energy cooperation with African nations through the South-South Cooperation framework championed by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
During the announcement, Minister Adjal emphasized the successful completion of a similar 40-megawatt power plant in Niamey, which was inaugurated under the leadership of Algerian Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb and Nigerien Prime Minister Ali Lamine Zeine Mahaman. This project demonstrated Sonelgaz International’s ability to deliver large-scale energy infrastructure within strict deadlines.
Looking ahead, the Algerian energy minister confirmed that Sonelgaz International has already initiated preparations for additional projects in multiple African countries, including Côte d’Ivoire and Mozambique. These initiatives reflect the growing demand for Algerian technical expertise and project execution capabilities in the energy sector.
Strategic vision for Africa’s energy future
Minister Adjal highlighted that Sonelgaz International will serve as a catalyst for public and private Algerian enterprises, integrating them into various phases of these projects through a value-chain approach. This strategy aims to enhance the competitiveness of national companies while fostering sustainable economic growth across the continent.
The minister also noted that the upcoming groundbreaking ceremony in N’Djamena will mark the beginning of a new chapter in Algeria-Chad energy cooperation, reinforcing the country’s position as a key player in Africa’s energy transition.
Next steps for the project
The groundbreaking ceremony for the N’Djamena power plant is scheduled to take place in the coming days, with full-scale construction expected to commence shortly thereafter. The project is anticipated to significantly improve energy access in Chad while serving as a model for future collaborations between Algeria and other African nations.
