The legislative journey concerning the amendments to articles L29 and L30 of the Electoral Code reached a definitive institutional phase. The President of the Republic had initially returned the text on May 7, 2025, citing “material errors.” Subsequently, the National Assembly convened for a second deliberation, re-approving the legislation on Monday, May 11, 2025, under an urgent procedure.

While some reports indicated a promulgation deadline of May 13, legal experts clarified that the constitutional timeframe for enacting the law had not yet elapsed by that date, ensuring due process.

Electoral Code Reform Takes Shape

This comprehensive reform emerges within a broader effort to recalibrate Sénégal’s legal framework governing elections. Specifically, articles L29 and L30 introduce new provisions concerning eligibility criteria for candidates and the overall structure of the electoral process.

The subsequent official promulgation by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has now conferred full legal authority upon the modifications previously endorsed by the Parliament, cementing these changes into national law.
