In a bold move to reshape Burkina Faso’s economic landscape, young traders across the nation gathered in Ouagadougou on June 20, 2026, for a landmark conference titled ‘From words to action: building a robust patriotic economy in Burkina Faso’. Organized by the Association of Young Traders of Burkina Faso, this event brought together entrepreneurs from diverse sectors to map out strategies for overcoming sectoral hurdles and fostering sustainable growth.
The central discussions revolved around enterprise formalization, skill enhancement for young traders, and the establishment of a more structured business environment. These pillars were identified as critical levers to amplify the sector’s contribution to national development and economic resilience.
Ismaël Sawadogo, president of the association, emphasized the collective drive among young traders to unite under shared goals and establish a permanent platform for dialogue. ‘Our mission is to create a unified front that tackles the challenges facing commerce today,’ he stated. ‘By pooling our insights, we can design practical solutions that drive progress and strengthen Burkina Faso’s economic fabric.’

A key highlight of the conference was a specialized workshop on enterprise formalization. Organizers underscored its urgency in today’s fast-evolving economic climate, where structured businesses gain access to public contracts, financing avenues, and institutional support programs.
Sawadogo noted, ‘Transitioning from informality to formal status is not optional—it is a necessity. Only through registration and compliance can our enterprises tap into opportunities that fuel growth and secure their future.’ He urged traders to prioritize obtaining the necessary documentation to unlock these benefits and fully participate in Burkina Faso’s economic transformation.

Key challenges and collaborative solutions
Participants voiced pressing concerns, including limited access to commercial spaces and bureaucratic bottlenecks that delay or complicate business formalization. The need for streamlined administrative procedures emerged as a recurring theme, prompting calls for institutional support to simplify these processes.
Roland Achille Sow, a prominent entrepreneur and guest speaker, praised the initiative and highlighted the long-term advantages of formalization. ‘The data speaks volumes: nearly 80% of businesses fail within a generation. This trend must change,’ he remarked. ‘We must move beyond short-lived ventures and build enterprises that endure, expand, and inspire future generations.’
Sow, who also serves as a delegate in the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Burkina Faso, reaffirmed the chamber’s commitment to backing initiatives that promote economic formalization—a cornerstone of its strategic plan. He stressed that registered businesses not only thrive but also create a legacy, access funding more easily, and contribute to national progress.

The conference concluded with a renewed pledge from Burkina Faso’s young traders to deepen collaboration, sharpen their entrepreneurial skills, and play an active role in shaping a stronger, more competitive, and resilient national economy. Their vision hinges on three pillars: better sectoral organization, sustained dialogue among economic actors, and robust support from public and consular institutions.
