The Beninese Customs Administration has achieved a significant milestone in its fight against cross-border fraud. On Sunday, July 12, 2026, a major operation at the southwest border led to the interception of a large shipment of illegally imported devices.

Operatives from the Hillacondji Customs Brigade, under the command of Captain Fortuné Allagbé, successfully halted the shipment before it could infiltrate illicit distribution networks. In total, 5,574 Android smartphones of contraband origin were seized during the operation.
Strengthening border security and economic protection
This record-breaking seizure underscores the intensified customs enforcement strategy spearheaded by Director General of Customs, Colonel Raouf Malèhossou Aboudou. The operation highlights a broader crackdown on fraudulent networks attempting to exploit Benin’s borders.
By dismantling this trafficking ring, the customs authority pursues multiple strategic goals:
- Safeguarding state revenue by curbing tax evasion linked to smuggled goods.
- Ensuring fair competition for legitimate businesses operating within legal frameworks.
- Protecting formal sector jobs vulnerable to distortions caused by illicit trade.
