The Republic of Benin has taken a decisive step forward in tackling the complex challenges of its coastline and the Gulf of Guinea. Through the OPERA project—Ocean Prediction Enhancement in Regions of Africa—a groundbreaking international training initiative has just concluded, drawing nearly 1,200 participants from across the globe and elevating Beninese academic institutions to the forefront of global maritime research.
Benin at the heart of international maritime expertise
Spearheaded locally by the UNESCO Chair / CIPMA at the University of Abomey-Calavi (UAC), this seven-week online program (MOOC) showcases the country’s growing role in strengthening oceanographic science. With 1,162 registrants hailing from 111 nations, Benin emerged as the most represented country, reflecting the deep engagement of its educators, students, and environmental managers.
Dr. Frédéric Bonou, a researcher and lecturer at UAC, shared his enthusiasm: « What makes this training exceptional is its practical focus. Each module was designed so learners could instantly apply newfound knowledge to real-world challenges—whether they’re coastal fishermen, environmental managers, or marine scientists. »
Cutting-edge tools for coastal protection and sustainable fisheries
Over 21 hours of interactive instruction, participants explored advanced technologies such as satellite observation, Argo floats, and high-resolution numerical models. The goal? Equipping local stakeholders with actionable skills to address immediate concerns:
- Coastal erosion prevention: Enhancing wave and tide forecasting to safeguard vulnerable shorelines.
- Sustainable fisheries management: Mapping and predicting high-yield fishing zones to balance productivity and conservation.
- Maritime safety: Strengthening surveillance of Benin’s territorial waters and mitigating pollution risks.
A select group of 500 learners received tailored mentorship, culminating in an academic certification jointly awarded by the UNESCO Chair at UAC and the University of Toulouse.
A strategic partnership backed by the European Union
The program’s success stems from a robust collaboration between the University of Abomey-Calavi, the Gulf of Guinea Ocean Sciences Summer School (GGOSSS), and Mercator Ocean International, with funding secured through the European Union’s Arc X / Global Gateway initiative.
By placing young researchers and volunteer scientists from UAC at the core of this international expert network—spanning Benin, France, the United States, and Spain—Benin is reinforcing its commitment to leveraging ocean science as a sovereign tool for sustainable development and maritime security.
