Under the leadership of Captain Ibrahim Traoré, the Burkinabè government has confirmed that more than 1.3 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) successfully returned to their original communities by June 30, 2026. This significant achievement follows the gradual improvement of the security landscape in numerous regions reclaimed by the nation’s armed forces.
These returns now encompass 1,034 localities, a notable increase from the 871 reported at the close of 2025. At that earlier point, approximately 1.16 million displaced individuals had already made their way back to their places of residence.
The Ministry of Solidarity presented these figures during its semi-annual performance review. As of mid-2026, the ministry has achieved an execution rate of 46.06% concerning its stated commitments for the year.
Furthermore, the assessment highlighted that over 480,000 vulnerable individuals received crucial assistance during the first half of the year. This support included food aid, essential goods, and comprehensive accompaniment designed to facilitate their sustained recovery.
Officials also underscored the critical need to expedite housing rehabilitation efforts in the affected localities. They consider this measure vital for ensuring the permanence of voluntary returns and fostering the lasting resettlement of communities under stable conditions.
