The Central Sahel region continues to grapple with a critical humanitarian situation. In nations like Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali, a staggering 7.5 million children urgently require assistance, even as some advancements have been noted in health, education, and civil registration.
UNICEF urges global action for Central Sahel children
Following a two-week mission across the area, Ted Chaiban, UNICEF’s Deputy Executive Director, highlighted concerns that this profound crisis remains largely unnoticed on the global stage.
Chaiban characterized the region as one where communities demonstrate remarkable resilience, yet are simultaneously enduring the persistent effects of instability, climate disruptions, and severe socio-economic hardships.
Forced displacement, violence, and educational shutdowns
Data provided by UNICEF indicates that over 3.6 million individuals have been displaced due to escalating violence. Furthermore, the United Nations has documented more than 1,500 severe violations targeting children, encompassing acts such as killings, abductions, and conscription by armed factions.
The educational sector has also been profoundly impacted by this crisis. As of 2025, over 8,400 schools have become non-operational, denying countless children access to learning and heightening their vulnerability to illness, psychological trauma, and destitution.
