President Oligui Nguema’s visit to France marked a significant turning point in Franco-Gabonese relations, after 42 years without a high-level state visit. The two countries have agreed to rekindle their partnership, abandoning the past’s exploitative practices to establish an equal relationship.
At the economic level, Oligui Nguema’s determination to break free from foreign companies’ exploitation of Gabon’s resources and transform them on-site has taken shape. As a sovereignist leader, our country must master its resources. This renewed partnership includes the transformation of manganese, which was discussed during the visit.
During his stay in Paris, President Oligui Nguema met with a French colleague, but this time as partners rather than just friends. The outcome of their discussions led to major gains for our country. The local transformation of manganese with the French group Eramet is set to begin, with an ambitious production target of 2031.
The agreement also includes the modernization of the Transgabonais railway project, which will receive funding from Proparco. This project has been ongoing for several years and aims to redefine the partnership in defense matters. The Gabonese president’s vision is to break away from the past and rebalance cooperation.
During his visit, President Oligui Nguema reaffirmed the Gabonese desire to diversify its partners, including China, Turkey, and India, to reduce dependence on any one country. France remains a key partner but not exclusive. The president emphasized that ‘Paris was once our historic partner, but today there are many partners. Gabon is attractive and will be open to everyone’.
The visit concluded with the signing of an economic partnership agreement, which aims to create a more balanced relationship between France and Gabon. The future holds promise for both countries.
