A pivotal summer is unfolding at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea actively reshapes its roster. The past week has seen intense transfer activity, with new signings announced and a definitive list of players marked for potential departure. The club is committed to rebuilding its squad for the upcoming season, aiming for robust competitiveness across all positions while simultaneously streamlining its ranks through sales and loan agreements.
In a notable move, academy product Tyreke George has officially transferred to Everton. The deal is valued at an initial £18 million, with performance-related add-ons potentially increasing it to £24 million. Chelsea has also secured a 15% sell-on clause for any future transfer profit involving George.
Meanwhile, Swiss international Granit Xhaka has opted against a move to Chelsea, choosing instead to remain with Sunderland. This decision comes despite the Blues’ keen interest and a reported £8 million offer submitted in recent weeks.
On the acquisition front, Chelsea has announced its first summer reinforcement: Italian defender Marco Balestra, arriving from Atalanta. Club management views Balestra not merely as a long-term investment but as a player ready to immediately challenge for a starting spot. Chelsea’s strategic approach emphasizes fostering strong competition within each position, rather than simply expanding squad numbers.
Balestra’s signing follows an exceptional loan spell at Cagliari, where he earned recognition as the best defender in the Italian league. During his time there, he featured in 38 matches, starting 34, and missed only one fixture. This impressive record underscores his readiness to make an impact in one of Europe’s most demanding leagues.
At just 21 years old, Balestra is believed by the Blues’ hierarchy to possess significant room for development. Reports from The Athletic suggest he is expected to play a substantial number of games next season.
His inclusion is also anticipated to bolster Chelsea’s offensive capabilities, particularly as captain Reece James increasingly operates deeper, either in midfield or as a right-sided central defender in a three-at-the-back formation. The future of Malo Gusto remains uncertain, with several prominent clubs, including Manchester City, reportedly monitoring his situation.
Key positions Chelsea aims to strengthen
The London club continues its dedicated efforts to reinforce several other areas before the transfer window closes. Negotiations are ongoing with Rayo Vallecano for 28-year-old left-back Pep Chavarria.
The search for one or more central defenders is also a priority, with Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace and Jacopo Ramon of Como currently leading the list of targets.
Chelsea maintains an interest in Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for his versatile attacking prowess. However, the club acknowledges that securing his services will be costly, as Villa is keen to retain the player, and other suitors are also in contention.
Following Sunderland’s decision to keep Granit Xhaka, Chelsea has closed that particular pursuit and is not planning a renewed offer. The arrival of Valentin Barco from Strasbourg is still anticipated, although the club has yet to formally announce the transfer.
Players likely to depart from Stamford Bridge
Chelsea is open to considering offers for Argentinian winger Alejandro Garnacho, who joined the club a year ago from Manchester United in a £40 million deal. While not opposed to his departure, Chelsea will only entertain a permanent transfer, with two Champions League-qualified teams already expressing interest.
Defender Trevoh Chalobah has also been placed on the market with a valuation of £35 million; the club has already declined two bids from Como. Young full-back Mamadou Sar is expected to be loaned to a fellow Premier League club rather than sent abroad.
Midfielder André Santos could also move on if a satisfactory offer materializes, a sentiment echoed for Enzo Fernández and Malo Justo, who are reportedly valued around £120 million and £75 million respectively.
Conversely, João Pedro retains the full confidence of the club. Meanwhile, at least one other forward is expected to leave this summer. The coaching staff has not yet finalized the roles for Nicolas Jackson, William Dalap, and Emmanuel Emiaga for the upcoming season, while the departure of Marc Guio, whether on loan or permanently, appears to be a certainty.
The list of players available for transfer further includes the defensive duo of Benoît Badiashile and Axel Disasi, along with reserve goalkeeper Philip Jorgensen. Concurrently, the club is negotiating the sales of Gaja Slonina and David Datro Fofana, while also considering loan spells for Kendry Bayes, David Washington, Caleb Wiley, and Shumaira Mahuka to provide them with crucial playing time and experience.
