Escalating cholera crisis grips Chad

The Ministry of Public Health has raised the alarm over a rapidly worsening cholera epidemic that has already claimed 13 lives since mid-June. Health officials report 239 confirmed cases, with the outbreak concentrated in Hadjer Lamis province and the capital N’Djamena.

The authorities declared the outbreak on July 24 following a sharp increase in infections. Health teams are working around the clock to contain the spread, with mass vaccination campaigns underway. Over 50,000 people have already received the oral cholera vaccine in an effort to curb transmission.

Critical challenges in outbreak control

The primary obstacle remains the limited access to clean drinking water and inadequate sanitation infrastructure, both of which significantly heighten the risk of cholera transmission. The disease spreads rapidly through contaminated food and water, making prevention efforts particularly challenging in regions with strained resources.

Cholera, while treatable with rapid rehydration therapy and, in severe cases, antibiotics, can prove fatal within hours without proper medical intervention. Health authorities are urging residents to prioritize hygiene practices, including frequent handwashing and the consumption of safe, boiled water.

Regional context and public health response

Chad is not alone in facing this crisis. Neighboring nations such as Nigeria, Central African Republic, and Democratic Republic of the Congo have also reported significant cholera outbreaks in recent months. The situation underscores the urgent need for coordinated regional health strategies to address waterborne diseases.

Public health experts emphasize the importance of sustained investment in water and sanitation systems to prevent future outbreaks. Until such infrastructure improvements are realized, communities remain vulnerable to the devastating impact of cholera.
