Côte d’Ivoire’s embassy in France protests mélenchon’s ‘insulting’ remarks

The Embassy of Côte d’Ivoire to the French Republic and the Principality of Monaco has formally lodged a strong protest against statements made by Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of the La France Insoumise party. These remarks, delivered during a political rally in France, were deemed a direct affront to Ivorian institutions, the Ivorian populace, and President Alassane Ouattara.

Ambassador Maurice Kouakou Bandaman signed a declaration outlining the diplomatic mission’s grievance. In his comments, Mr. Mélenchon reportedly delved into Ivorian political life, specifically accusing the head of state of sidelining opponents during the most recent presidential election and securing an alleged fourth term, which he controversially labeled as “unconstitutional.”

The embassy unequivocally denounced these declarations as “irresponsible, irreverent, insulting, and degrading.” Furthermore, the diplomatic representation asserted that the French politician possesses no legitimate authority, qualification, or competence to pass judgment on Ivorian institutions responsible for organizing and validating the nation’s various electoral consultations.

The diplomatic mission underscored Côte d’Ivoire’s status as a sovereign state since its independence on August 7, 1960. It firmly stated that no foreign political figure holds the right to utter remarks considered offensive towards the nation.

In its official communication, the embassy also emphasized the enduring ties of friendship and cooperation between Côte d’Ivoire and France. These relations, it highlighted, are founded on mutual respect and have been significantly strengthened under the presidencies of Félix Houphouët-Boigny and Alassane Ouattara. The embassy suggested that any political leader aspiring to the highest office in France should duly consider the fundamental interests of relations between the two countries.

Finally, the Embassy of Côte d’Ivoire to the French Republic and the Principality of Monaco declared its intention to initiate “all legal actions” to ensure that these statements, which it views as an offense to the Ivorian people and their President, are addressed before the appropriate legal bodies.

The declaration, dated July 16, 2026, bears the signature of Maurice Kouakou Bandaman, the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Côte d’Ivoire to France and Monaco.
