Dr Congo and unfpa champion youth for sustainable national growth

JOINT PRESS RELEASE

Kinshasa, July 11, 2026 – The Democratic Republic of Congo is actively engaging in the spirit of World Population Day. With a remarkable DRC youth development focus, over 65% of its population is under 25 years old. This year’s commemoration centers on a vital theme: « Realizing the hopes and aspirations of young people – today and for the future ».

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Ministry of Planning are jointly sounding a crucial alarm: the nation’s future hinges on its ability to harness the immense potential of its young population, transforming it into a powerful engine for growth. Amidst shifting global demographics, the Democratic Republic of Congo strategically positions its youthful age structure as a significant national asset.

The « Lives, Choices and Futures » Survey: Unveiling Youth Aspirations

A groundbreaking UNFPA report, compiled from a survey of 100,000 young individuals across 73 countries, challenges common misconceptions. Young Congolese, mirroring their global counterparts, express a strong desire to start families. However, they face substantial systemic hurdles: pervasive economic uncertainty, precarious employment opportunities, and significant housing challenges.

A compelling 88% of these young people identify financial security as an essential prerequisite for parenthood. This data does not indicate a diminished interest in family life, but rather a profound call for increased opportunities and greater stability.

The UNFPA Executive Director emphasized during World Population Day celebrations that population policies relying on coercion are destined to fail unless they directly address the obstacles identified by young people themselves. Echoing the sentiments of a young community leader, « It’s not just about choosing to have fewer children. It’s about having fewer choices. »

DRC: Transforming Challenges into Development Levers

In response to ongoing crises, particularly in the eastern regions of the country, UNFPA and the Government are significantly strengthening their collaborative efforts. Their commitment, fully aligned with the National Strategic Development Plan (PNSD 2024-2028), is built upon two fundamental pillars:

  • UNFPA actively champions enhanced access to reproductive health services and quality education. This empowers young people, especially vulnerable girls and women, to exercise complete autonomy over their bodies and lives.

  • UNFPA supports the Democratic Republic of Congo in accelerating the second General Population and Housing Census (RGPH2) process. Furthermore, it assists in developing Demographic Dividend (DD) profiles across provinces, ensuring that investments are precisely targeted where the needs of young people are most pressing.

A Call for Profitable Investment

UNFPA reiterates that investing in youth is not merely a budgetary expense but represents the most productive and impactful investment a nation can make. True prosperity will only materialize when young people are equipped with the resources and opportunities to contribute fully to the national edifice.

« Young people – from North to South, East to West – have spoken. It is time to listen to them. And it is time to help create the conditions that enable them to make genuine choices, establish the families they desire, and fulfill their hopes and aspirations, » affirmed the UNFPA Executive Director.

UNFPA and the Ministry of Planning extend an invitation to all development partners, civil society organizations, and the private sector for a constructive dialogue. The aim is to sustainably reshape the narrative and build the Congolese nation of tomorrow: one that is innovative, robust, and resilient.
