Ebola outbreak in Democratic Republic of Congo intensifies: 515 cases and 91 deaths reported

Bunia, Democratic Republic of Congo — The Ebola virus disease outbreak in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo continues to spread, with health authorities reporting alarming figures as the crisis deepens in the Ituri province.

Latest statistics reveal the severity of the outbreak

According to the latest report from the National Institute of Public Health, the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has now affected 515 individuals, with 91 fatalities recorded since the beginning of the outbreak. The current case fatality rate stands at 17.7%, highlighting the deadly nature of this particular Bundibugyo strain.

Health teams are currently managing 283 active cases in isolation and treatment centers, while 12 patients have recovered since the outbreak began. In the last 24 hours alone, health officials confirmed 27 new cases, demonstrating the rapid pace at which the virus is spreading.

Ituri remains the epicenter of the crisis

The Ituri province continues to bear the brunt of this outbreak, with 17 of its 36 health zones affected by the virus. Key affected areas include Aru, Aungba, Bambu, Bunia, Gety, Kilo, Komanda, Lita, Logo, Mambasa, Mangala, Mongbwalu, Nizi, Nyankunde, Rimba, and Rwampara. The neighboring North Kivu and South Kivu provinces also report active cases, with the Katwa health zone in North Kivu showing particular concern with 11 confirmed cases and 8 deaths.

  • North Kivu: 5 confirmed cases (Beni: 5, Butembo: 4, Miti-Murhesa: 3, Oicha: 2, Kalunguta: 1, Kyondo: 1, Goma: 1)
  • South Kivu: Currently monitoring the situation

Challenges hampering response efforts

The ongoing security concerns in certain areas of Ituri, particularly in Mambasa where ADF attacks have recently occurred, continue to pose significant challenges to the response teams. These attacks resulted in 2 deaths, 4 abductions, and widespread looting of property, further complicating access to affected communities.

Logistical difficulties in reaching remote communities and the persistent issue of misinformation and rumors about the virus are also hindering containment efforts. Health authorities are urging the population to remain vigilant, report any suspected cases immediately, and strictly adhere to prevention measures to curb further spread of the disease.

Call for community engagement and international support

With the outbreak showing no signs of slowing down, local health leaders and international partners are emphasizing the need for enhanced community mobilization. They stress that successful containment requires not only medical interventions but also strong community participation in prevention and reporting efforts.

The situation remains critical, with health officials warning that without immediate and coordinated action, the outbreak could escalate further, posing a significant risk to public health in the region.
