Bunia, Democratic Republic of Congo — The Ebola virus disease outbreak in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo continues to spread, with health authorities reporting alarming figures as the crisis deepens in the Ituri province.
Latest statistics reveal the severity of the outbreak
According to the latest report from the National Institute of Public Health, the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has now affected 515 individuals, with 91 fatalities recorded since the beginning of the outbreak. The current case fatality rate stands at 17.7%, highlighting the deadly nature of this particular Bundibugyo strain.
Health teams are currently managing 283 active cases in isolation and treatment centers, while 12 patients have recovered since the outbreak began. In the last 24 hours alone, health officials confirmed 27 new cases, demonstrating the rapid pace at which the virus is spreading.
Ituri remains the epicenter of the crisis
The Ituri province continues to bear the brunt of this outbreak, with 17 of its 36 health zones affected by the virus. Key affected areas include Aru, Aungba, Bambu, Bunia, Gety, Kilo, Komanda, Lita, Logo, Mambasa, Mangala, Mongbwalu, Nizi, Nyankunde, Rimba, and Rwampara. The neighboring North Kivu and South Kivu provinces also report active cases, with the Katwa health zone in North Kivu showing particular concern with 11 confirmed cases and 8 deaths.
