The historic first return flight of Burkinabè pilgrims from the 2026 Hajj landed at Ouagadougou International Airport on June 2, carrying 342 faithful who had completed their spiritual journey in the holy sites of Islam. The arrival marked the official start of the repatriation phase, greeted with warmth by family members and government officials.
Dressed in their finest traditional attire, the pilgrims radiated joy and relief, their faces reflecting the deep fulfillment of having answered the call to faith. Among them was Hadja Karidja Karambiri/Koné, whose emotions were palpable as she stepped off the plane.
« The experience in Mecca was beyond words. As a first-timer, I am overwhelmed with gratitude. Every moment unfolded perfectly… We prayed fervently for the restoration of peace and social cohesion across Burkina Faso, » she shared with visible emotion.
While a full assessment of the pilgrimage’s success is still pending, Saïdou Sankara, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Mobility, confirmed that no major incidents were reported during this edition. In a heartfelt address, he conveyed the government’s appreciation for the safe return of the pilgrims.
« Tonight, we carry a message of satisfaction and joy as we welcome our brothers and sisters back in good health after fulfilling their spiritual duty. On behalf of the Minister of State, we have come to greet them and extend our warmest congratulations.
May this sacred journey strengthen their faith, and may the prayers offered in Mecca be answered—for their families and for the entire nation, » he affirmed.

El Hadj Oumarou Zoungrana, speaking on behalf of the Federation of Islamic Associations of Burkina (FAIB), praised the meticulous organization of the Hajj 2026. He extended special commendations to the steering committee for their flawless execution of the pilgrimage.
The airlift operations will continue uninterrupted until all Burkinabè pilgrims are safely home, under the watchful eye of both authorities and the organizing committee.
