Morocco awarded CAN 2025 title as Senegal appeals to CAS
Morocco has been declared the winner of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) following a controversial final against Senegal, prompting the defending champions to formally contest the decision with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) stripped Senegal of their title after their players walked off the field in protest during the final, which ended in a penalty shootout victory for Morocco. Senegal has now filed an appeal, arguing that the decision to revoke their championship status was unjustified.
Why Senegal is contesting the CAN 2025 decision
The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) has lodged an appeal with the CAS, demanding the reinstatement of their title won in extra time with a goal from Pape Gueye. The federation argues that the final result should stand despite the late controversy, which began when the referee awarded Morocco a contentious penalty that was ultimately missed by Brahim Díaz.
The Senegalese team walked off the pitch in protest following the penalty decision but returned shortly after. CAF later ruled that their actions constituted a forfeiture of the match, leading to Morocco being declared champions.
CAS to review the case with urgency
The Court of Arbitration for Sport has acknowledged the appeal and pledged to expedite the process while ensuring a fair hearing for both parties. Matthieu Reeb, CAS’s Secretary General, emphasized the tribunal’s capability to handle such disputes efficiently, stating:
« The CAS is fully equipped to resolve this dispute through specialized and independent arbitrators. We understand the urgency for both teams and fans to receive a final decision. Our priority is to ensure a swift yet equitable resolution while upholding the rights of all involved. »
While no hearing date has been set, the CAS aims to conclude proceedings « in the best possible timeframe » without compromising due process.
What’s next for African football’s top tournament?
The outcome of this appeal could have significant implications for the legitimacy of the CAN 2025 title. Should the CAS rule in Senegal’s favor, the federation may reclaim their championship status, reshaping the tournament’s historical records. Conversely, upholding the CAF decision would solidify Morocco’s first-ever CAN victory.
Football fans across Africa and beyond are awaiting the tribunal’s verdict, which will not only determine the 2025 champions but also set a precedent for how future disputes in continental competitions are handled.
